Coldwater Shuffleboard Club
2nd Annual General Meeting September 13, 2007
2nd Annual General Meeting Coldwater Shuffleboard Club
September 13, 2007
The final day of shuffling for the season was held one hour later than usual and ended with a catered roast beef and chicken dinner for 92 people.
We had about 80 people for the shuffling portion and a few guest arrived for the dinner which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
The annual General Meeting was held before dinner.
President Gary Pipher called the meeting to order just before 4:00 P.M.
Message from the President.
I want to thank everyone for taking part in our final day of shuffleboard for the 2007 season.
We will try to go through the meeting quickly and be finished in time to enjoy the delicious meal that is being catered to by Larry Lalonde.
We have had a fantastic season of shuffleboard this year with 94 registered members, and according to the “Shuffler” Statistics, we were the largest and fastest growing shuffleboard club in all of Ontario.
Last year we had 58 members and this year we had an increase of 63% in our membership.
Before we get into our meeting I would just like to bring you up to date on a few items of interest.
We are so fortunate to have the use of this great facility and at such an affordable price.
We have been able to keep the registration fee down because of the hourly rate, we pay for the Arena, but I would expect an increase in rent for another year.
The Curling Club ask only that we respect their building, and clean up after we use it each week.
We were able to purchase some new pieces of equipment this year and pay our bills and still end up with a few dollars in the bank.
Several of the court lines were scraped off the floor as a result of the ice removal last spring and they required re-painting before we could begin our season.
I suppose this can be expected each year, and a touch up will no doubt be required again next year.
A more portable template is required to make this painting repair job a little easier, and we have a few ideas of what is required.
We managed to purchase more cues this year and now have a total of 36 yellow cues that belong to the club.
We also purchased 5 new sets of discs, at greatly reduced prices.
We applied 2 gallons of Nella Seal to the 16 courts twice during this summer and the painted court lines appear to have held up better since the seal was applied.
The discs also travel smoother even though there are a few drift challenges to contend with.
We have purchased 3 gallons of Nella Seal from the London Club at ½ price and will use it on the courts next year.
We had some very successful events this year that I must mention:
I want congratulate Doris Bumstead on winning a Gold Medal at the USA Senior Games in Louisville Kentucky this summer.
And let me also congratulate our Coldwater Club members who played on the Canadian International Shuffleboard Team at the Tournament in Midland.
It was a big honor for our Coldwater Club to have you playing on the team.
We had Ed McGrath and Peter Berg on the men’s team.
Lottie Bell, Erica Berg and Grace Pipher on the ladies team
Congratulations to all these players for their great performance and for representing Canada so well.
I would also like to thank the workers from our Coldwater Club who made the International tournament successful.
This includes everyone on the organizing committee for all the work they put into making the tournament what it was. The tournament director, the score keepers and their coordinator, the court maintenance crew, everywhere you looked there was someone from the Coldwater Club keeping things running smoothly.
We had our own successful Tournaments this year; starting with the CNSA Doubles tournament in June and then our Ontario Seniors Games tournament just last month.
I want to thank everyone who helped with these tournaments from getting gift items from sponsors / preparing food /selling 50/50 tickets and a special thank you to the tournament director “Lorraine Pollock”.
Lorraine is well known for her fairness and cool manner of running tournaments for all organizations in Ontario and Florida, and of course the International Shuffleboard Tournament in Midland.
We are so fortunate to have here as a member of our Coldwater Club.
And to her husband Bill Pollock for all the work he does throughout these tournaments .
I want to thank everyone who donated cakes and cookies and supplies for our coffee break each week; and to Barb for making the coffee and putting out the treats.
I also want to thank Barb for taking care of the finances for our club.
It is so important to the operation of a successful club to keep up-to-date and accurate financial records and we all thank you for this.
Ross and Isobel Matthews for taking care everything when Barb and I are unable to be here.
I want to thank Mervin and Iris for donating and setting up the sound system at our CNSA tournament this year.
We appreciate everyone’s contribution; it is your support that makes our club so successful.
Congratulations to Peter Berg and Ed McGrath for winning the CNSA Doubles tournament; and who can forget that great shot by Ed that won the game,
Congratulations to Jake Dyksterhaus and George O’Reilly for their Gold Medal win at the Ontario Seniors Games Tournament. Jake and George will now go on to play at the Actifest Games in London next year and will represent Simcoe County in the 2008 Ontario Seniors Games Competition. “Congratulations Guys “good luck and enjoy Actifest.
I approached several organizations for financial support at the beginning of the year, and we had limited success in our requests.
The Township of Severn and The Community Foundation of Orillia were not on the list of donors.
We did however receive financial support from the Lions Club of Coldwater and Casino Rama.
Thank you letters were sent to both and we will request their support for another year.
Thank you letters have been sent out to all sponsors and supporters of our CNSA Doubles tournament. The generosity of these sponsors is what makes a successful tournament.
We have applied to the Ontario Trillium Foundation for a grant, but it may be later this month or next before we hear if we have been successful or not.
With the grant money we had planned to purchase new discs / scoreboards / court dividers / a PA system as well as four roll out courts.
The roll out courts could be used for winter shuffleboard and we could possibly make use of the Community Center auditorium.
The winter shuffleboard would require a separate “winter registration” to cover off the expense of renting the auditorium, and if there is a shortfall it should not be expected to come from the summer shuffleboard.
I suppose some of these items could have been brought up later in the meeting but I just wanted to keep you informed on the clubs activities.
I know there must be a dozen ways to improve our games and make improvements to our Club.
Your suggestions are not being ignored and many of these ideas should be implemented at our Club for another year.
Minutes of the 2006 AGM were read by the secretary and motion by Lois Morfitt and seconded by Doug Bell to accept minutes as read. Carried.

Refreshment fund has a total of $553.90. This gives us a grand total of $1,741.91. Motion by Bev Fowler and seconded by George O’Reilly to accept report as given. Carried.

President Gary Pipher asked for a motion to include the following unwritten rule to our constitution
Fair Play
Fair play begins with the strict observance of the written rule; however, in most cases, Fair Play involves something more than unfailing observance of the written rule.
The observance of the spirit of the rules, whether written, or unwritten, is important.
Fair Play results from the measuring up to one’s own moral standards while engaged in competition.
Fair Play is consistent demonstration of respect for teammates and opponents, whether they are winning or losing.
Fair Play is consistent demonstration of respect for officials, and acceptance of their decisions and a steadfast spirit of collaboration with them.
Sportsmanlike behavior should be demonstrated by modesty in victory and composure in defeat.
Motion by Bill Pollock and seconded by Ross Matthews to include this unwritten rule in our constitution. Carried.
President Pipher reminded members that there is a Junior Curling Tournament here in Coldwater in January and they need help. See Pat Niepage if you can help out.
Have a safe winter and we hope to see everyone back here in May.
Motion by Pat Niepage and seconded by Beverly Fowler to adjourn. Carried.
President Gary Pipher asked Lottie Bell to say the Blessing before our dinner.
Respectfully submitted
Lorraine Pollock - Secretary
