The shuffleboard misnomer. What is “American Shuffleboard?”

The original shuffleboard started in Europe, and its country of origin is unknown. The game was played in a large yard and eventually became a game of the elite in England.

Pool or billiards is a popular pub game played among friends, typically over a beer or two. However, pool is also an intense competitive game with high stakes. It also originated in Europe and evolved from an outdoor, croquet-like game.

American shuffleboard is an indoor pub game that also came from Europe. Recognized as a game played while drinking with friends, the game was not recognized as a game of skill until an 1848 court ruling. Prohibition then stalled the popularity of the game, but it was resurrected following prohibition’s repeal. According to the Shuffleboard Federation,  the depression was good for the game. People couldn’t afford restaurant food, so the restaurants created game rooms. American shuffleboard had a rocky road as different players wanted standardized rules for tournaments. Today, it is only known among those who have seen a shuffleboard table or played the game. The table is 22 feet, so it is hard to miss.

The table is the main feature of the game and a piece of art in itself. A pub or restaurant with a shuffleboard table invites discussion from those who are unfamiliar with the game. A person acquainted with shuffleboard is drawn to the table, and he or she will likely throw at least one puck if the table is prepped.

Finding shuffleboard tables for sale requires some research, as it is a big purchase that requires a lot of room. The investment involves quality, type of wood, scoring devices, and value. But make no mistake, the awe-factor is real when a person walks in to an establishment and sees an American shuffleboard table. Inexplicably, pool tables do not evoke the same emotion. They have possibly become too commonplace.

American shuffleboard is a game for everyone, and it requires very little skill to play and a lot of skill to be competitive. Therefore, players do not bore while playing with novices because they can use that time to sharpen their skills or show off. Trick shots are the name of the game, and people shot with their elbows or shoot multiple pucks at a time to show their abilities. It is a fun, leisurely past time that many do not know about.
